Tarlac Under Quarantine Due to Newscastle Virus
The Department of Agriculture (DA) has quarantined the province of Tarlac after it was hit by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) which caused the death of thousands of chickens.
DA Undersecretary Jose Reaño said the NDV has also affected poultry in Quezon City and the provinces of Zambales, Pangasinan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Laguna and Quezon.
Reaño said they have sent samples of the virus to Australia to determine its strain.
The official also denied that the virus will cause a shortage in poultry supply.
“Mahihirapan tayo magka-shortage dahil since last year, ang ating inventory ng breeder ay sapat, sobra-sobra pa. Ang prediction nga namin ngayong first quarter ng 2016, mayroon pa kaming growth ng kahit two or three percent,” Reaño said.
“Sa actual number, sa loob ng isang buwan, aabot pa tayo ng mga 28 million.”
