Racist German National Accused of Assaulting Kenyan Workers Flees the Country

By John Wanjohi

A German national has fled Kenya after police launched investigations into alleged racial discrimination and assault accusations against him.

Hinteregger Jurgen, a supervisor at a foreign company that is constructing the Sh20 billion Thiba dam in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, allegedly sneaked out of the country on Sunday.

The 47-year-old secretly left the country a day after he was summoned by officials from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for questioning.

Kirinyaga East police commander Antony Wanjuu said the foreigner was supposed to return to Kirinyaga DCI offices on Monday but did not show up.

“He was supposed to return on Monday for further interrogation but failed to do so and escaped to his country of origin. The company management has confirmed that the foreigner has left,” said Wanjuu.

Jurgen, who was employed by Strabag Company, is accused of beating Kenyan workers at the construction site and referring to them as bushmen.

The German was arrested and grilled on Saturday after six workers accused him of verbal and physical abuse. The workers described him as a brutal and ruthless man.

Strabag’s manager in Kenya James Karanja said the suspect traveled back to his country without informing the company.

“Jurgen called and informed us that he is already back at his home country. We were shocked when we learned that he is not within Kenya,” said Karanja.
