PHILIPPINES – GOVERNMENT TO UPSKILL WORKERS (THE MANILA TIMES)
The Philippines government will upskill Filipino workers in preparation for the expected influx of foreign businesses, reports The Manila Times, citing information provided by the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE). The government said that measures are being crafted to ensure that the Philippines will readily have a pool of well-educated and highly-skilled workforce. The upskilling of workers must be industry-led as well as demand and market-driven, it said.
One initiative seen to address jobs mismatch is the Department’s jobs fair focusing on knowing the requirements of each industry to effectively address them. The government has earlier said that the foreign trips of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will create jobs as some investment pledges are about to be implemented. The government is also working to provide a cheap and stable energy supply that could sustain manufacturing industries that create jobs. The Department of Energy targets to have 35% of the country’s supply coming from renewable energy sources by 2030, and 50% by 2040.
