OFW Group Urges PH Gov’t to Lift Travel Ban on Hong Kong

by Rodney Artida

A group of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) called on the government to lift the temporary travel ban on Hong Kong.

The measure was sought following the lifting of the travel ban imposed by the Philippines on Taiwan amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019) epidemic.

ABS-CBN News reported that an OFW group known as #StrandedPH wrote a letter addressed to International Criminal Court on Justice appealing to the international body to ask the government to remove the travel ban.

Joms Ortega, a Hong Kong-based OFW, told ABS-CBN News that the group believed that the government was not fair in the implementation of travel restriction with the China’s Special Administrative Region.

“Ang #StrandedPH is appealing and not threatening the government. We are hoping they would consider our appeal dahil naghihirap na rin ‘yong mga tao dito,” he explained,

“Since wala sila doon, no work no pay. Some might be terminated or have already been terminated dahil urgent ang kailangan ng employers.”

Meanwhile, the government is reconsidering the travel restrictions imposed on Hong Kong and Macau.
