Malaysia Nightclub Raid — Report
Filipino women were among some 100 women rounded up in a raid on a nightclub in Malaysia late Saturday night, a Malaysian news site reported Sunday.
Malaysia’s New Straits Times said police raided the club in Jalan P.Ramlee at 11:45 p.m., supposedly to check on human trafficking there.
The report said those detained included women from Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Iran, Philippines and Indonesia.
Also, the report said the women were investigated under the Immigration Act and Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act.
Moreover, the report said a Malaysian woman who worked as a cashier at the premises was also arrested. Police failed to find the manager.
Federal Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Division principal assistant director SAC Datuk Roslee Chik said the women were aged 20 to 45.
“Some of them did not have valid identification documents and claimed to be trafficked into the country for sexual exploitation purpose,” he said.
An investigation showed the women were entertaining customers when the raiding team, led by Assistant Superintendent Ooi Chong Lai, went in.
Lai said the raid was conducted after authorities received a report sexual exploitation activity are being done at the club.
“When the team arrived, there were about 100 customers at the premises. Police officers introduced themselves, before they went to check the patrons. Upon checks and documentation process, all the customers were released,” he said.
Roslee said the women were supposedly “guest relations officers.”
He said they were taken to the Dang Wangi police headquarters for questioning and documentation.
