Maid Fed Vegetables for Nearly 2 Yrs by ‘Economical’ Family

The domestic worker is considering looking for another Hong Kong employer as she fears that her health will worsen because of malnutrition

A Filipino domestic worker was only fed vegetables for almost two years by her “economical” employers in Hong Kong. Emilyn, 32, who works for a family in Kowloon, said she was only given vegetables for her meals, reports sunwebhk.com, a news portal for Filipinos in Hong Kong.

Emilyn said she didn’t know whether her employers’ economical style was due to religion, health or finances. She complained that she was made to eat bland vegetables as her employers also did not buy any other ingredients to make them more tasty.

She described the family as “not so poor and not so rich.”

One of Emilyn’s friends advised her to endure the situation until her contract expires, as she has a good relationship with her employers otherwise.

As her contract expires next month, Emilyn is considering looking for another employer instead of renewing her contract as she fears that her health will worsen because of malnutrition.

According to Hong Kong law, foreign domestic workers can ask their employers for a food allowance of HK$1,053 (US134) per month instead of being provided free food.
