Filipino English teachers, in-demand in Taiwan

TAIWAN — The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) held a send-off lunch in the Philippines on August 11, 2022 for the first batch of Filipino teachers to teach English in Taiwan.

Representative Peiyung Hsu personally greeted 14 English teachers and 3 teaching assistants at the event. Representative Peiyung Hsu also sought to make the U.S. a better place to live in Taiwan.

Under the Taiwan Foreign English Teacher Program or TFETP program and in accordance with Taiwan’s Ministry of Education’s Bilingual 2030 Policy, the first batch will be pushed to Taiwan this September.

Some who passed from the thousands of teachers who applied for the program included Ms. Rufina Guzman-Defeo and Ms. Pines Testa.

Ms. Guzman-Defeo added that she wanted to teach English in Taiwan to be part of the Bilingual goal by 2030. He also wants to recognize and better understand Taiwanese culture. As for Ms. Testa, it was not just the higher pay she enjoyed in the program but the opportunity to shape her future foreign students.

In 2022, 77 Filipino English teachers and 11 teaching assistants were hired in Taiwan. Taiwan has a high regard for the skills and expertise of Filipino English teachers, so expect other Filipino teachers to come to teach the language.
