Maricel Agustin was supposed to return to the Philippines in 2014 but according to reports her employer did not allow her to leave
A Filipina domestic worker in Kuwait who lost contact with her husband in the Philippines for several years is safe and has returned home.
On February 19, the domestic worker’s husband, Rogelio Padilla, pleaded for help, via a journalist, for help to look for his wife, who he had not been in contact with since 2013.
His wife, Maricel Agustin, went to work in Kuwait in 2011. Newsline Philippines reports that she was supposed to return to the Philippines in 2014 but that her employer did not allow her to leave.
Padilla said that the last contact he had with his wife was in 2013, when a friend of Agustin’s sent him a photo of her in her employer’s home in Kuwait. Remittances home from Augustin stopped in 2014.
Padilla recently reached out for help in finding Augstin, prompting her employment agency to look for her.
On Tuesday morning, Philippines labor secretary Silvestre Bello III said Agustin had been found and was repatriated on February 24 (Saturday). He said Agustin’s employment agency saw a Facebook post written by a journalist contacted by Padilla. The agency then contacted the employer.
Bello said Agustin did not have a mobile phone in Kuwait and therefore had no means of communicating with her family in the Philippines.
