MILPITAS, California – A man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing to death 20-year old Filipino-American Danica Bascos.
On October 5, first responders were called to Bascos’ Milpitas neighborhood after the victim was found unresponsive in bed, with multiple stab wounds to her back.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A neighbor was able to identify the suspect, Kevin van Nguyen in a line-up, based on surveillance video.
A previous report against Nguyen was filed after an altercation involving Nguyen, Bascos and her new boyfriend, John Souza.
Milpitas police arrested Nguyen at his San Jose home on October 6 and found a bloody sweatshirt, two knives, gloves, and the victim’s bloody cell phone.
According to media reports Nguyen demanded Bascos to break up with her new boyfriend. The report also revealed that Nguyen said demons made him kill Bascos.
A GoFundMe account that was set up to pay for Bascos’ funeral services continues to receive donations.
“I’m really thankful for all our friends and relatives. They give us their full support. We try our best to seek justice for our daughter,” said Daniel Bascos, the victim’s father.
Nguyen is being held without bail and faces charges of murder and battery.
During his arraignment at the Santa Clara County Superior Court last Thursday, Nguyen did not enter a plea.
He is due back in court on the morning of October 16th.
