The family of a Filipino domestic helper who fell to her death at a Shenzhen building last month has called on Hong Kong authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The police must examine why the maid, who was employed by a Hong Kong couple, ended up dead in Shenzhen although she was supposed to be working only in Hong Kong, the family said.
Lorain Asuncion, 28, was found dead on July 24 by Shenzhen police, who suspected she fell from the 7th floor of a local building.
Her body remains in Shenzhen as of now, with authorities in the mainland city saying they are still awaiting the result of a forensic examination.
Lorain’s elder sister Jenevieve Javier, who just returned to the Philippines after a trip to Shenzhen, said the family hopes Hong Kong police can get to the bottom of the case and make sure justice is served, Apple Daily reports.
She revealed that her dead sister, who went to work in Hong Kong for a couple in late 2016, had complained earlier that she was not happy and that she was feeling homesick.
Lorain allegedly told her family that she was being mistreated by her Hong Kong employers and that she was taken to work illegally in Shenzhen at least four times.
Jenevieve said she is distressed about her sister’s death and that there are many unanswered questions about the incident.
According to media reports last week,Lorain’s family was informed by a Hong Kong recruitment agency thatthe maid took her own life.
After learning about the incident, Hong Kong’s Immigration Department has been following up on the matter and has also alerted the police, which then began an investigation.
The dead woman’s employers were arrested in Hong Kong on August 18.
They were suspected to have made a false statement as they claimed the maid had worked only in Hong Kong, according to the police.
