DFA Lifts Alert Level for Thailand

MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs has lifted the Alert Level for Thailand.

“Crisis Alert Level 1 in Thailand has been lifted following the country’s lifting of Martial Law on 01 April 2015,” the DFA stated.

Under Alert level 1, Filipinos in Thailand are advised to take necessary precautions.

In January of last year, the DFA raised alert level 2 (restriction phase) for Bangkok and surrounding areas placed under a state of emergency.

Months later, it lowered the alert level from 2 to 1 as the political situation there continued to normalize.

Reuters reported that Thailand’s military seized power on May 22, ousting the government of former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra after months of sometimes violent street protests in Bangkok in which nearly 30 people died.

The junta said that it would replace martial law with Article 44, a special security measure, which would allow security forces to still make arrests without a court warrant and to detain people without charge. — With a report from Reuters
