BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Hospitals in the country’s summer capital recorded 1,007 cases of dengue from January to June this year, a more than 500 percent increase over the 214 cases over the same period in 2015, Baguio Health Services Office Infectious Disease program coordinator Dr. Donnabel Tubera said.

Although none of this city’s seven hospitals reported any deaths from the mosquito-borne disease, Tubera called the spike in the number of patients from all over the Cordillera and even from outside the region “very alarming” and said they expect the figures to rise as the rainy season sets in.

She reminded hospitals to properly document cases, particularly the places where the infection happened, and urged officials of Baguio’s 128 barangays to help monitor their communities for mosquito breeding areas.

She also urged families to bring any members who have had fever for at least two days to health centers or hospitals.
