Execution of Pinay in Indonesia Deferred

MANILA – The execution of a Filipina involved in drug smuggling in Indonesia has been deferred, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Tuesday.

DFA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Charles Jose said that death sentence was deferred pending a judicial review.

In an earlier report by the Agence France-Presse, Jose said the application to review the woman’s death sentence was filed at a district court near Yogyakarta.

The Pinay, whose name was not disclosed, was carrying 2.6 kilograms (5.73 pounds) of heroin when nabbed at Yogyakarta airport in April 2010.

Jose said they are hoping that her sentence will be commuted.
