Number of Domestic Workers to Hit 1m Following Launch of Al-Durra Firm

KUWAIT CITY, July 1: An official has predicted that the number of male and female domestic workers will reach 1 million by the end of this year following the launch of the government-based Al-Durra Company for Recruitment of Domestic Labors in September because of the new low-cost permits, reports Al-Shahed daily.

The high prices of up to KD 1,500 have forced families to depend on only one housemaid, which was not the case ten years ago before the prices of housemaids coincided with the rise in salaries, allowances and financial aid given by the state to the employees of ministries and government agencies without study.

According to a source, the current procedures on the number of domestic workers allocated to each family will continue as it is, but the number of domestic workers will increase but likely stop at 680,000 men and women of various nationalities, mostly Asian and African, because the head of the family will pay amount not exceeding KD 300 as guarantee for one year, much to the disappointment of visa traders.
