ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Appellate Court sentenced an Arab national couple to 13 years behind bars, to be followed by deportation, after the blood parents waived retribution.
The two defendants were charged with killing their maid by beating her up to death.
The court also obligated the defendants to pay Dhs100,000 in diya and a fine of Dhs50,000 for employing a maid illegally.
The case dates back to when the police received a report stating there was a dead body of an unidentified woman in a sandy area, with burnt fingers and wrapped in cloth.
Security teams discovered that the woman was murdered, after the forensic lab found out evidence proving she had been beaten up and burned.
The police discovered that the victim was an Ethiopian maid, violating the law of residence.
A brawl broke out with the wife of her employer, and the latter beat her up with a stick in different parts of her body. The couple also detained the victim in their apartment, and illegally deprived her of her freedom for more than a month. During that, the couple reportedly tortured the victim physically and psychologically.
The public prosecutor demanded the application of the Sharia’a laws in connection with the charges.
On being questioned by the Public Prosecution, the defendants admitted assaulting the victim and the first defendant confessed to pouring chemicals on her dead body and transporting it to a remote area.
