Dress Modestly, Female Nurses Told

JEDDAH — The Ministry of Health has asked its female nurses and technicians working in the Holy Sites during the Haj to wear modestly and never to put on revealing or short clothes.

The ministry has made its female staff sign a pledge to wear Shariah-compatible modest clothes and to cover the whole head with scarfs which are not transparent.

The female staff have also been asked not to wear tight, transparent or revealing clothes with pictures or writings imprinted on them.

“You should not wear gold or other accessories. You are only allowed to wear wrist watches and rings,” it said.

The ministry also banned its female staff from using nail polish, putting on make-up or wearing high-heeled shoes.

“The shoe should be without a high heel and should not make noise while walking,” the ministry said asking its female staff not to go down to the warehouses or leave the hospitals without official permits and without a Mahram (male guardian).

The pledges also included the prevention of roaming aimlessly at the hospital’s courtyards, commitment to the work ethics and not to perform the Haj.
