DOH Records 26 New HIV/AIDS Cases in Eastern Visayas
The Department of Health in Eastern Visayas has expressed alarm over the alarming increase in the HIV/AIDS in the region.
Boyd Cerro, chief of the DOH’s regional epidemiology unit, a total of 26 people were recorded with HIV/AIDS in March alone.
Cerro said that a total of 312 people have been confirmed with HIV/AIDS since the DOH started its tally of the disease’s victims in 1984.
The regional DOH official said they continue to closely monitor the conditions of the HIV/AIDS victims.
Cerro said that majority or 80 percent of the HIV/AIDS cases in the region are due to male to male sex.
He added that only a few sex workers have been confirmed with HIV/AIDS in the region as they have regular medical check-ups.
The DOH official reminded the public that symptoms occur eight to 10 years after exposure to the disease.
He urged the public to seek medical tests right after having sexual intercourse for early detection.
He said that a person can learn that he had contracted the disease if he would undergo medical tests within three months after having sex. —Joseph Tristan Roxas/ALG, GMA News
