Comelec: OAV Voter Turnout Tops Previous Elections

Despite the glitches, the voter turnout in the ongoing month-long overseas absentee voting (OAV) has already topped previous election periods.

Latest figures from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office for the overseas voting show out of the total 1,376,067 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who registered this year, 288,133 or 21 percent have cast their ballots overseas as of May 4.

The figure is substantially more than the turnout in the 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013 elections.

Nearly half of those who voted were from the Middle East, followed by OFWs in the Asia Pacific.

Officials said they expect a more dramatic increase in the turnout at the end of the voting period.
