How DOH Plans to tackle Zika Virus Threat

The Department of Health (DOH) has called on the active participation of the public in their campaigns against the threat of the Zika virus.

This, as the World Health Organization sounded the alarm on the virus’ potentially explosive spread.

A surge in Zika virus cases is reported in Latin American countries, linking the virus to the microcephaly disorder suffered by thousands of infants in these countries.

DOH spokesperson Lyndon Lee Suy admitted it will be difficult to detect Zika virus, which is possibly transmitted by someone outside the country, among travelers.

“It may be hard for us really to detect possible Zika infection among the travelers simply because the travel will be relatively far and there’s no direct flights coming from these Latin American countries,” Suy said.

But he assured the DOH is developing works on vector controls to interrupt the transmission of the virus here in the country. He also said they are giving focus now in information dissemination campaigns to raise awareness on what Zika virus is.
