Despite the outbreak of Zika virus disease (ZVD) in some areas in the Americas, the United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) said it does not yet recommend the issuance of any travel ban in the affected countries.

“We would like to recall that based on available evidence, WHO (World Health Organization) does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions related to Zika virus disease,” UNWTO said in a statement..

The tourism promotion arm of the UN, however, urged countries with confirmed cases of ZVD to issue regular updates on the spread of the mosquito-borne illness in their territories so travelers could take the necessary precautions against it.

“It is important is to ensure quick and transparent information is provided to travelers as a precautionary measure and to avoid misinterpretations about the situation,” UNWTO said.

“As advised by WHO, travellers should stay informed about Zika virus and other mosquito-borne diseases and consult their local health or travel authorities if they are concerned,” it added.

“As per the impact on tourism, it is too early to make any impact assessment considering the evolving nature of the situation,” UNWTO said.
