PH, Indonesian Lawyers Taking Steps to Accelerate Case vs Veloso’s Recruiter
MANILA – Private lawyers for overseas Filipino worker (OFW) on death row Mary Jane Veloso, their Indonesian counterparts and government officials are working together to accelerate the case against her illegal recruiter.
Atty. Edre Olalia, counsel for the Veloso family, said they are taking legal steps to prevent any delays in Veloso’s case against her recruiter Maria Cristina Sergio and partner Julius Lacanilao.
“We will make it certain that no delaying tactics will succeed. We will frustrate the delaying tactics because they are dribbling the balls, so to speak, the accused, in these cases, but I would reckon that if we can pursue this with earnest given the refinements of the legal tactics, I think we can see the end of the tunnel probably within the year or after some months after one year,” Olalia said.
The case, filed in May last year, is scheduled to be heard on February 11 and March 9. While arraignment is set on February 11.
Olalia, who returned from Indonesia with the Veloso family on Friday, said Mary Jane is still optimistic she will be allowed to go home.
Mary Jane remains on death row in Indonesia following a temporary reprieve in April 2015.
