CANADA – A fashion show that showcased modern Filipiniana dresses and barongs by Filipino designers in Mindanao was recently held in Edmonton.
It was the first-ever Filipiniana fashion show showcased in the city which unveiled the creations of talented Filipino designers from southern Philippines.
“I get my inspiration from our Mindanao culture wherein we use Mindanao fabrics like Mindanao silk, ikat, and some other Muslim fabrics coming from Mindanao,” said Mimi Parrel Pimentel, a designer from Cagayan de Oro City.
The fashion show displayed Filipino traditional dresses for all ages while some designs had modern touches.
“We are trying to have a project with the idea of Mindanao designers as global designers,” said Benjie Manuel, another designer also from Cagayan de Oro City.
The fashion show will also be seen in other cities across North America. Part of the show’s proceeds will benefit ANCOP International Canada Inc., a non-profit organization that sends children to school and builds homes in the Philippines.
“As a designer, from each city we have a fashion show probably it will give us an inspiration to do more and most especially, to be proud of as a Filipino,” said designer Boogie Rivera.
