TUGUEGARAO CITY: The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) has allocated 300 plantilla positions for licensed teachers who are working either as domestic workers or are in non-teaching related occupations abroad to encourage them to go back to their original profession, according to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis–Baldoz

During her recent visit here, Baldoz urged OFW-teachers to return either come back to pursue teaching or resume their careers as teachers through their program dubbed as ‘Sa ‘Pinas, Ikaw and Ma’am/Sir Project’, a component of the Department of Labor and Employment’s National Reintegration Program for OFWs, Philippine Information Agency reported.

She reportedly said the program is the pioneering convergence project of the DOLE, DepEd, Professional Regulation Commission, and other government agencies to provide opportunities for OFW-teachers to teach in the public education system, to wean them away from domestic work, and uplift their status.

Those with more than five years’ teaching experience or those without teaching experience will have to undergo a refresher course requirement of Deped at the Philippine Normal University (PNU) in Manila, the report said.

“We have already issued a memorandum addressed to concerned Division Superintendents that once the OFW-applicants have undergone and passed the selection process, they shall already be given permanent items and assigned to the schools that the DepEd had identified,” she was quoted as saying.

She added that 10 Filipino domestic workers have been hired already by the DepEd under the project, Philippine Information Agency reported.
