POEA Invites Ad Agencies, PR Firms to Join Drive vs. Illegal Recruiters, Traffickers

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has started inviting ad agencies and public relations firms to join the government’s campaign against illegal recruiters and human traffickers.

POEA head Hans Leo Cacdac issued the invitation via his Twitter account Thursday, a day after the Labor Department called for more action against illegal recruitment and human trafficking.

“Any ad agencies, PR firms or their industry associations interested in joining the campaign against illegal recruitment and human trafficking?” Cacdac said.

On Wednesday, the Labor Department said it is eyeing a television program that can help overseas Filipino workers like Mary Jane Veloso avoid falling prey to human traffickers and illegal recruiters.

DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz also ordered the POEA and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration to draw up an action plan to protect OFWs.

Veloso was sentenced to death in Indonesia after being caught with heroin. She was given a reprieve at the last minute, after insisting her recruiter may have set her up.

Baldoz also said POEA and OWWA should first strengthen preventive illegal recruitment measures, the first line of defense for OFWs.
